Diving Into Dolphin Exhibit Details

McKenney’s planned and installed piping systems for a new dolphin exhibit building at Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

THE CHALLENGE

The dolphin exhibit was an addition to the existing aquarium site located in a congested metropolitan area with minimal space for maneuvering and no storage areas. While the aquarium remained operational, several existing exhibits in the path of the new dolphin exhibit, including the penguin exhibit, had to be shut down—requiring a rebuild in other areas and construction of temporary facilities during the transition.

THE SOLUTION

McKenney’s used BIM to comprehensively map out the piping needs for the dolphin exhibit, which has an independent system, as well as the rebuilt exhibits and temporary structures served by existing systems. To contend with space limitations, all materials were fabricated offsite and delivered as needed.

THE RESULTS

McKenney’s attention to detail and flexibility resulted in the project being completed on time and on budget while Georgia Aquarium remained open to the public.
