What is IoT? Internet of Things devices is a network of sensors, meters, appliances and other devices that are capable of sending and receiving data. You can enable building staff to have more context for what’s going on and they can act more quickly and be more responsible when they have the right information about the building.
It can be tough to know where to start with smart building technology when there are IoT applications for nearly every building system. Building automation exists to allow facility managers to be able to do their jobs easier by maintaining performance and pointing out potential issues that is typically harder to detect with only hands-on management.
IoT devices deliver the right information at the right time to the right person and fall into one of the four categories:
- Energy: Includes popular applications like wireless energy consumption monitoring.
- Equipment: Those that optimize lighting and HVAC use.
- Environmental quality: Devices might measure particulate matter or CO2 (Carbon dioxide).
- People or spaces: Devices that can measure occupancy, space utilization or how many people have passed through a certain entrance.
There is also a financial benefit to reduce utility spending and equipment costs as well as the productivity and behavioral benefit to IoT devices.
